They also maintain patient records handle technical duties involving equipment and eyeglass handling. Usually they prep patients with their medical history and examination process before the optometrist comes in. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The main duty of an optometrist is to examine the eyes and other parts of vision. They may test and prescribe on ones vision. They recommend eye wear such as contacts and eyeglasses as needed. Optometrists also diagnose and treat disorders, visual problems, and injuries of the eyes.  SALARY $106,140 EDUCATION Optometry requires a Doctor of Optometry (O.D.), three years of post secondary education, coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, English, and math. Applicants must take the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT)  to apply for programs. The DOC takes four years to complete. Coursework includes anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, optics, visual science, and the diagnoses and treatment disorders of the visual system. Finally they must be licensed by the National Board of Examiners in Optometry.  DEMAND FOR PROFESSION This profession is needed for the care in optical health.
