STUDENT SUCCESS STATEMENT

'' I WASN'T TRYING TO LEAVE A LEGACY. I WAS TRYING TO DO WHAT WAS RIGHT.''- DEAN SMITH

This quote speaks of humbleness. It is not about having a winning mindset. It is about having the mentality to always try and give it your best. If all you are thinking about is winning, then you are only inspired by greed. You will not get very far if you ignore the journey. You cannot only focus on the ending point. Dean Smith never thought about himself or his pride. He always put his team first above all. He is an example to follow. It is one of the golden rules of life, do what is right. Never mind the results, as long as you do what is right. You can never choose the wrong and expect to walk out free or as a winner. If all you care for is yourself, you will never live life the right way. Do not think of winning, think of doing good. Do not leave a legacy of winning, leave a legacy of doing what was right.

''The reward for doing right is mostly an internal phenomenon: self-respect, dignity, (self-worth), integrity, and self-esteem.'' - Dr. Laura Shlessinger This quote is true. Usually when doing something that is right you never really get a physical reward. The satisfaction is internal since you yourself commited the act. At times there might not be any witnesses. Physical recognition comes for other reasons. When you acknowledge those factors, right truly will feel like a phenomenon. The feeling you get when doing right is like no other. That is the only feeling apart from all others. That sense of well being will not be caused by any thing else. Reward over moral is a great prize.

''I have been asked what I mean by 'word of honor'. I will tell you: Place me behind prison walls- walls of stone ever so high, every so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground- there is a possibility that in some way or another I might be able to escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk line around me and have me give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I'd die first.'' - Karl G. Maeser I think this quote is very noble. It speaks of good character. The quality it takes is of the ultimate trust and loyalty. Yet, I can't help but disagree at its exaggeration. Trust and loyalty can only go so far and do so much. While it is true, having those qualities and being true to your word is incredible, it can not be the only action. For example, to die out of a promise seems extreme. There are many ways to fufill a promise and be a trustworthy person. Dying should not be considered. Staying true is one thin...
